Success in startups isn’t just about having the best idea—it’s about making the right decisions, consistently and quickly. The best founders don’t just rely on instinct; they use mental models to cut through complexity and focus on what really matters.
TODAY’S TIP
PRODUCT STRATEGY
Thinking Smarter as a Founder

One of the most powerful models is First Principles Thinking. Instead of accepting things as they are, break them down into their core truths. Ask yourself: what assumptions am I making? What would this look like if I started from scratch? This is how Elon Musk reimagined the cost of rocket manufacturing and how Airbnb reshaped the hospitality industry.
Another essential model is Opportunity Cost. Every “yes” is a “no” to something else. Founders are constantly juggling priorities, but the best ones know that choosing the right battles is just as important as winning them. Before committing to a feature, hire, or strategy, ask: what am I giving up to do this?
Then there’s Inversion Thinking—instead of only asking “How do I succeed?” also ask “How could I fail?” By identifying potential pitfalls early, you can avoid them before they become problems. Jeff Bezos famously applied this when launching Amazon, considering what could cause the business to fail and then designing around those risks.

The Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule) is another game-changer. In almost every business, a small percentage of inputs drive the majority of results. Find the 20% of customers, features, or marketing efforts that generate 80% of value, and double down on them. Avoid the trap of spreading yourself too thin.
Finally, there’s Compound Interest Thinking—not just in finance, but in effort. Small, consistent improvements add up over time. Whether it’s building a brand, refining a product, or growing an audience, founders who stay patient and focus on long-term gains create businesses that endure.
The key to making better decisions isn’t luck—it’s having the right mental shortcuts. By applying these models, you’ll cut through noise, move faster, and make choices that drive real impact.
