Building a product is exciting. There’s always a new feature idea, a clever tweak, or a shiny enhancement just waiting to be implemented. But here’s where many founders and product creators go wrong: they confuse “more” with “better.” In reality, complexity often drives users away rather than drawing them in.

TODAY’S TIP

PRODUCT DESIGN
Streamlining the User Experience

Think about the products you love and use every day. Chances are they’re simple, intuitive, and don’t overwhelm you with unnecessary choices. That’s the goal. But reaching simplicity is not always simple—it takes thoughtful design, user feedback, and a willingness to say no to features that aren’t essential.

Start by identifying your product's core purpose. What’s the one thing your users absolutely need from you? Focus on doing that exceptionally well. If you’re a fitness app, maybe it’s seamless workout tracking. If you’re a social platform, maybe it’s making connections easier. Whatever it is, make it your north star.

Next, audit your current features. Be ruthless. If a function doesn’t clearly support your product’s main goal or isn’t being used enough, consider cutting it. Simplifying doesn’t just help your users—it streamlines your development process, makes marketing clearer, and even reduces technical debt.

Writer RAG tool: build production-ready RAG apps in minutes

RAG in just a few lines of code? We’ve launched a predefined RAG tool on our developer platform, making it easy to bring your data into a Knowledge Graph and interact with it with AI. With a single API call, writer LLMs will intelligently call the RAG tool to chat with your data.

Integrated into Writer’s full-stack platform, it eliminates the need for complex vendor RAG setups, making it quick to build scalable, highly accurate AI workflows just by passing a graph ID of your data as a parameter to your RAG tool.

User testing is your best friend in this process. Watching someone interact with your product is eye-opening. They’ll get stuck where you thought navigation was intuitive, miss features you believed were obvious, or simply abandon the process altogether. Pay attention to these moments. They’re gold for improving your product.

Don’t overlook the importance of onboarding either. The first few minutes a user spends with your product are critical. If they feel confident and can quickly grasp the value you offer, they’re far more likely to stick around. Simplify your onboarding steps, offer helpful cues, and eliminate unnecessary friction.

Finally, communicate your product’s simplicity as a strength. When users know they won’t have to wade through complexity, they’re more likely to give you a chance. Highlight ease of use in your marketing, product descriptions, and customer testimonials.

Simplicity isn’t just a design choice; it’s a competitive advantage. It builds loyalty, drives growth, and makes your product stand out in a crowded market. So, the next time you’re tempted to add more, ask yourself: will this make the experience better—or just busier?
