Pivoting can be a game-changer, but it can also be a mistake. Some of the biggest success stories started as something completely different—but so did some of the biggest failures. The challenge? Knowing whether your current path needs more time or if it’s time to shift gears.

TODAY’S TIP

STRATEGY
Knowing When to Pivot vs. Persevere

Persevere Unfinished Business GIF by CBS

First, assess whether your problem is execution or the idea itself. If users love the concept but struggle with the experience, a pivot might not be necessary—refining what you already have could be the answer. On the other hand, if you’re constantly explaining why your product matters and still not getting traction, your core idea may need a rethink.

Look at the data, not just your gut feeling. Are you seeing any signs of momentum—small but consistent wins that suggest progress? Or are you stuck in an endless cycle of trying new things with no meaningful results? If there’s even a small audience that’s deeply engaged, you might have something worth doubling down on.

Feedback is your best guide. Are customers asking for improvements, or are they fundamentally not interested? If people keep saying, “I wish this did X instead,” they’re showing you a path forward. But if they’re indifferent, that’s a red flag—it’s hard to iterate your way out of apathy.

Timing matters, too. Some of the best ideas take longer to catch on. If your market is growing and competitors are starting to emerge, staying the course might pay off. But if the industry is shifting away from your vision or the need you’re solving is disappearing, a pivot could be your best move.

Finally, ask yourself: Are you pivoting because of real, strategic reasons—or because you’re impatient? Building anything worthwhile takes time. If you’re constantly chasing the next shiny idea, you might be the problem, not the product.

The best founders know when to adapt and when to stay the course. Before you pivot, make sure you’re not just running from temporary challenges. Persistence and flexibility both matter—it’s about knowing which one to lean on at the right time.
